Arren Leifon
It rose on the horizon with the dawn. The White Tower. More beautiful in reality that it had been in any of my dreams. I sat on the ground and took a roll of bread from my pack. How strange it was, to finally be looking at it. How long had I dreamt of coming to this place? Of the training I would receive from its masters? And now here it was, standing before me, a breath-taking beacon in the first light of the morning. I half expected it to be a dream. Surely, I would get to its gates and find myself awake in my bed. Or perhaps it would fade, faster than any mirage, and leave me in nothingness. I took another bite of bread. That’s the problem with dreams. You never know exactly what to do when they come true. You sleep each night wishing they’ll come true but deep down you’ve resigned yourself to accepting that it’s impossible.
I ate my fill and continued on to the Tower. With every closing footstep I felt my heart tighten. This was it. I was really doing it. I was really going to train, to become a true master of the sword. My fingertips tingled. My hand craved the feel of a hilt within it. It had been way too long since my last battle. Sure, I’d run through the usual warm-up exercises on my journey here, to keep me limber and ready, but it wasn’t the same. Nothing can compare to the rush of a battle; the flurry of moments which can mean life or death. It’s the best feeling in the world. Even if it’s also the most terrifying.
I made it through the gates later that morning. It was quieter than I expected…emptier. Don’t get me wrong, I hadn’t expected any kind of welcoming party but I figured I’d at least see a few people moving back and forth. I was to Caemlyn, to its throbbing crowds, this emptiness was…unsettling.
I heard noise coming from a little ways off and wandered over to investigate. A little ways off I saw three figures move but from so far away I couldn’t make out any more than that. I headed in the direction they had come from and was rewarded for my choice. A crowd had gathered outside and its members seemed to be talking excitedly amongst themselves. Knowing that crowds tended to be a good starting point for anything, I headed over.
“Hey,” I said to one of the nearest people, a black-haired girl in a white robe “what’s going on?”
She looked at me and her green eyes widened. “You’re…you’re an apprentice.”
There was a collective intake of breath and the sensation of an uncomfortable number of eyes staring at me.
“Uh…”
There was the sensation of panic in the air, and the pushing began. I felt it more than I saw it. Someone bumped into my back and instinct forced me into a roll. Of course, trying to roll through a mass of bodies isn’t exactly the easiest thing to try. I probably ended up more kicked than if I’d just stayed standing. So, I resigned myself to my mistake and stopped. I let my head fall back onto the ground and sighed, wondering how I’d managed to created so much commotion.
“I don’t have any idea what’s going on.” I opened my eyes expecting to catch a slither of sky between a crowd of faces. But I didn’t. What I did see, was white, delicate, and surrounded by flesh that I had never seen before. There was a scream, more panic. I knew I should move but for some reason the only thing I could do was lay there, staring straight up, as embarrassment burned hotter and redder on my face.
