Is it really effective to use a team that has a common type? like All water with 2 types....Or Fire with 2 types, or even pure.

No, but it's fun and gets you bonus glory points, especially if you still manage to win with it.

It's a way to keep the ingame fresh and entertaining. This is really something you can do with most any game, and I highly recommend it; after you've beaten it a few times, up the challenge rating by deliberately limiting yourself. There was a challenge back in the SNES days, offered by the man who created Mario, to see if you could get through one of those classic Super Mario Bros. games (1, 3, World, etc.) without getting a single coin. Hello replay value.

Ive yet to try a Ru/Sa monotype team, is there much trading involved, or are there a lot of same-type Pokemon scattered through Hoenn? I don't have the ability to trade Pokies over.

Maybe when I finish Sapphire a bit ore (ie: elite four ) then I'll try it.

Well, it depends on the type. If you want to try Grass, you can start with Treecko, pick up a Seedot/Lotad in Route 102 and then a Shroomish in Petalburg Woods and you're on your way. If you try Dragon...well, RS is the first generation where a Dragon monotype is even remotely feasible, and it's still not a walk in the park. I played a Dragon monotype a while ago and Glacia very quickly became a synonym for death; only my Kingdra stood a chance against her, since Flygon, Altaria and Salamence are all doubly weak against Ice.

An all bug type team is tedious and needs some help from other types once in a while, but you can beat all the gym leaders and the elite four eventually, even with not so high of a level. Of course, using an all underused bug type team which I do is MUCH harder... -_-

But it IS fun! And it's always nice when your locals aren't super pokemaniacs and you beat them with a monotype team.

EDIT: Speaking of troubles through a monotype bug team, Flannery and Norman. XP

You might have to be a bit creative and liberal with your choices, however. Like choosing dual types that share one common element.

Like, let's say I want to make an all Water team. First up is obviously Swampert, so I have an electricity resistance right there. Possibly Whiscash for the same reason. Next up would be Ludicolo, for grass types and to nullify Leech Seeders. He's also OK for taking on flying types. Pelipper would be the next choice, but he's fodder for Electric Pokemon. Wailord would be good if you bumped up his speed and HP for Water Spouting. Finally, the head of your team should be Kingdra.

That's the best Water-type team there is, in my opinion. I've won in RSBot many-a-times. There are disadvantages, thought. A Dragon Claw Sceptile or a varied-up Raichu can tear this team apart. Those situations are rare, however.

monotype teams are hard, but way fun.
Water's probably the strongest monotype there is.
...but only 'cuz water's the most common type...at least I think it's the
    most common type...whatever.
    what type are you considering?

it doesn't really matter what type you use really, as long as they know
    a veriety of moves.
I made a water team before and the only thing they had in common other
than their type was "hydro pump" ...that took lots and lots of breeding.
but yeah...you should try a team, they're fun.

Nearest I come to a monotype is Team Green (still a L100 work in progress) - common element is that the members have to be green. Means I tend to have a Grass team, though there are some useful exceptions (I lust for Politoed...). And thank goodness for Kecleon

Default Water is most common indeed

Yup, there are 23 water types in Ruby/Sapphire
Second best is flying with 14 types.

Fire and Grass have respecitively 5 and 10 and electric 7.

In short: there are many more water-pokemon than other types!

Darn you o wise and powerful rinku. Darn you. I was makin one of those myself! It's so far got Sceptile, Flygon, Ludicolo, Kecleon, Xatu, and Breloom. My consideration of "green" is just having it on them. (like Xatu...)

I played with an all fire team my last time through Saphire. The members were Blaziken, Houndoom, Magcargo, Camerupt, Torkoal, and Typhlosion. It was really tough beating Wallace and it took a ton of luck gettin my Houndoom's Solar Beam off on Milotic! I used Groudon in the E4 instead of Camerupt b/c his drought ability always gave me an upper edge on the opponent. Blaziken is awesome against Glacia and Rock Slide on my Magcargo is the only reason I ever beat Drake.

If you do a search of the board archives you might find my original proposal for Team Green about a year ago - you were pipped at the post by quite a bit

I use the same definition, which allows Gardevoir (White according to the pokédex...). Dustox is another one worth thinking about - it even counts as Green in the pokédex. Bug/Poison can be a handy combo and its the only one in Ruby/Sapphire.

I plan to have a full suite of green pokémon, but my current working team is:

Legendary where appropriate: Rayquaza (of course!)

    Flygon
    Sceptile
    Cacturne
    Gardevoir
    Kecleon
    Xatu

Your set probably makes more sense, though I like having a Dark/Grass to counter all the Psychics with an electrical attack for backup. Bring on Politoed!

I know this is kinda random, but I wanted to know just for my information:

is having a surfing pikachu in r/s considered illegal? =D

Hey........How bout a Team with two types like Water and Grass or Dark and Psychic just like the trading card theme decks. I think its cool right?
Maybe a team of Absol, Shiftry, Sharpedo, Grumpig, Solrock and Metagross.(DArk-Psychic) Or
Milotic, Swampert, Gyarados, Laturn, Manectric, Raichu(Water-Electric)
    Kinda cool right?
