    Okay.. Okay okay.

Okay so it'll wait for Protect to drop, and all that other fun stuff. Hmm... Since he's using combos...

Sucker Punch the mother and combo it with a Faint attack for that extra damage. And for good measure... Shadow Ball.

    ‡ Round 11 ‡

After a brief referee swap, we can resume! Rahno flops about with anger and begins to image all the glorious Revenge he'll be able to exact upon his purplish foe, but alas, it will not come to pass. A spectral fist jets out of Jibakurei and clobbers Rahno hard, finishing the battle once just like that. We're one-all, folks.

    Jibakurei: <-10 EP>
    Rahno: <-7 HP>

We find ourselves in a lovely Grassy field replete with boulders... and... ohmigodwtf. All eight-headed and ugly, Yamata watches over the battle with the intention of Poisoning the shit out of all of us. Eek.

Alright, I'll use Typhoon the male Hydreigon with levitate ability. It's a shame that the tactic I tried with Rahno didn't work though!

Its my own fault for sure, but still -,-

    ‡ Pre-Round ‡

    ‡ Round 12 ‡

We find ourselves in an entirely new arena as this laggy-ass battle continues. Grass and rocks stretch outward in all directions as both Gym Leader and challenger alike release their next Pokemon, summoning black dragons to the field. The eight-headed hydra supervising this little skirmish approves. Godzilla begins by flying low to the ground toward Typhoon and then slicing-'n'-dicing the Hydreigon with a quick swipe. Typhoon grunts in annoyance before popping and sparking with electric current. He releases his electric charge upon Godzilla, whose body grows stiff and uncooperative... which is exactly what you don't want to happen in the middle of a Gym battle, pretty much.

    Godzilla: <-6 EP; Par>
    Typhoon: <-12 HP; -4 EP>

Shenanigans continue as Typhoon keeps up the zapiness. The Brutal Pokemon bellows and releases a crisp Charge Beam at his opponent, but doesn't receive a stat boost. C'mon. Seriously? Gozilla takes the hit and stumbles backwards before spinning and smacking Typhoon upside the head with his tail. Teehee. Potential concussions ftw.

    Godzilla: <-8 HP; -4 EP>
    Typhoon: <-9 HP; -3 EP>

Typhoon closes his eyes before summoning a deluge of groundwater from beneath the earth's surface. The water rips through the ground and collapses upon Godzilla in a tremendous wave, whisking the Charizard away. The round comes to a conclusion as Godzilla gets to his feet and then Dragon Pulses Typhoon in the face. No! Not the money-maker! There goes that six-figure modelling contracting he was counting on. Balls.

    Godzilla: <-15 HP; -7 EP>
    Typhoon: <-14 HP; -8 EP>

    ‡ Round 13 ‡

Shenanigans continue with their current state of shenanigan-ness as Typhoon goes for a ferocious strike. He bellows to the heavens, striking fear into Godzilla's heart, and then encases his body in stone before ramming forward hard. Godzilla flies backwards and lands within a foot of one of the field's scattered boulders. Rather than Countering, Godzilla hides behind the boulder and begins to shiver. That Roar was scawy.

    Godzilla: <-20 HP; Roared; Can't move!>
    Typhoon: <-12 EP>

After having spared Typhoon the past several actions, Paralysis finally rears its ugly head and renders the Charizard immobile. Typhoon decides this is the perfect opportunity for... bathtime! He summons another Surf and brings it crashing downward upon the Charizard's head, dowsing the beast as thoroughly as a beast can be dowsed.

    Godzilla: <-15 HP; Can't move!>
    Typhoon: <-8 EP>

Typhoon bides his time with Godzilla continues to shiver. Roar. Totally an underused move.

    Godzilla: <Can't move!>
    Typhoon: <Herp derp>

Not at all. As I ref it, Roar prevents you from attacking during the initial action in which you are Roared; then, every action to follow, you have a 25% chance of being immobilized until the effect wears off.

Alright then, want to play it that way huh?

Typhoon, relax while it digs underground. Then, depending on whether or not the hole is filled in, use either Surf to fill the hole with water or Earthquake (which really should hit since he's trapped underground thus unable to fly?), and then fill up the hole with Rock Tomb if you used Surf the first turn, and if you used EQ use another one if it hit, or just relax if it didn't.

Yeah, that's where things get slippery. As I interpret it, unless a Flying-type specifically has lost its Ground-type immunity because of Gravity/Smack Down/Roost/etc., it's going to be invulnerable to Ground-type damage no matter what. It might seem counter-intuitive, but there are a hundred and one other scenarios where immunities don't make sense yet we (or at least I) go with them anyway. (Tri-Attack against a Gengar, anyone? Bone Club against a Gyarados?) Thus, even though logic dictates that a Digging Charizard should take damage from Earthquake, I feel like the fairest thing is to ref with the immunity taken into account. So. Yeah.

    ‡ Pre-Round ‡

    ‡ Round 14 ‡

Frightened as hell by his opponent, Godzilla begins Digging like mad to get away. Typhoon watches leisurely as the Charizard vanishes beneath the ground, but he doesn't seem too pressed to go after him. Instead, he takes a break.

    Godzilla: <-3 EP>
    Typhoon: <+6 EP>

Okay, break time over. Seeing that Godzilla's burrow hole has been sealed shut with earth, Typhoon begins thumping his tail against the earth like an overgrown (and horrendously ugly) child throwing a temper tantrum, which causes shock waves to diffuse outward in all directions. Meanwhile, tucked away in his subterranean nook, Godzilla attempts to assume a defensive position but Paralysis prevents him from doing anything at all.

    Godzilla: <Can't move!>
    Typhoon: <-8 EP>

The round ends with a bit of R&R for all parties involved. It is a Sunday, after all.

Godzilla: <+6 EP; Roared no more>
    Typhoon: <+6 EP>

No R&R for the Yamata, though! Suddenly, the mighty dragon comes to life. It uproots a tree and throws it at Typhoon <-15 HP>, who takes significant damage. The dragon looks around for Godzilla, but can't seem to figure out where he went. Typhoon fumes. (Hey, it could have been worse, bud. You could have been Toxic'd as well.)

The Bone Club thing I understand (although it could be to do with weight making it difficult to throw high enough or something? I dunno, I've always thought Gyarados can fly by levitation or something like that), but Tri Attack against Gengar is a bad example because Gengar's immunity comes from something biological, not something that's just to do with being airborne like fliers or Pokemon with Levitate. I'd be fairly sure that if something was underground, it's gonna feel an earthquake, even if it's only slightly.

    ANYWAY, moves!

Start with a Rain Dance, and combo it with Surf if it pops out of the hole in the first turn. Otherwise, wait for Zilla to pop up and use Surf to knock it down just as it's about to get up. Relax in any actions in between, and if it pops out before the end of the turn use another Surf.

Yeah, that's supposedly the crucial difference: that Normal/Ground/Ghost/Steel/Dark-types have biological immunities to certain types whereas Flying-types possess their immunity by virtue of them simply not touching the ground. In that case, there's no reason for Flying-types (or Levitaters/Magnet Risers) to be immune to non-ground-based Ground-type moves such as, say, Mud-Slap or HP Ground... yet these moves inevitably "miss" Flying-type targets, even when said target isn't using an evasive maneuver (such as Fly). What's so special about a Mud-Slap or HP Ground that they should always miss Flying-type targets when Toxic or HP Water don't? Also, what if the Flying-type Pokemon is Sleeping or Frozen? Shouldn't it be susceptible to Earthquakes in such a condition? But I've never seen a Flying-type struck for Earthquake damage when it's Sleeping. (Mind you, it probably just hasn't come up, but I'd like to see how the ref would handle it.)

Anyway, I realize I'm probably overthinking this. I tend to do that. My point is that, IMO, it's a whole lot less messy to simply say that Flying-types possess the exact same sort of biological immunity that those other types possess. When a Flying-type is under the effects of Gravity/Smack Down/Roost, the Pokemon loses its ability to fly and, correlatively, it also loses its biological immunity to Ground-type moves. When a Flying-type is Digging, it does not lose the biological immunity. Slippery situation suddenly made a whole lot less slippery.

But of course, that still seems silly... because, as you point out, Mew's Charizard friggin' is under the ground and therefore touching it so it should still take some sort of damage from the violently shaking earth, right? Maybe I'll take that sort of thing into account in the future. I don't know. If I do, for consistency's sake, Dark-types should always take some sort of damage from Zen Headbutt (it's still being hit with a head! heads hurt!), Ground-types should always take some sort of damage from ThunderPunch (why shouldn't it do at least as much damage as Mega Punch, mirite?), Steel-types should still take some sort of damage from Poison Jab (but prolly not a lot), etc. Again, there are a hundred and one weird scenarios where immunities make no sense.

(Also, going back to the Tri-Attack/Gengar example... what is a Tri-Attack if not a Thunderbolt + Ice Beam + Flamethrower combo, just weakened a fair bit? This sort of combo would still hit Gengar, but Tri-Attack because of its Normal-typing does no damage. That's sort of the weirdness I was addressing. There are plenty of ways to rationalize this weirdness, of course, by saying Tri-Attack simply exudes Normal-type energy and that's just the way it is and there's no other explanation needed... but I'm just saying if we're operating within a framework that compels us to entertain this kind of weirdness, then an underground Charizard taking no damage from an Earthquake isn't that preposterous.)

    Anyway.

Maybe this is a conversation for the chat thread?

You bet! Since you won the first match-up, lost the second and won the third by DQ, you get... five points? And Mew gets four points? And I get six? Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, which I prolly am.

Since DL didn't say whether you should get Mew's badge, I'm just gonna scurry off and nominate you in the GYM NOMINATION TOPIC.
